Program details: Cutting propagation of Magnolia Grandiflora cultivars for production
This program will include the elements needed for the success of cutting propagation of Magnolia Grandiflora. Topics will be success rates per variety, soil and water management, treatment of cuttings, fungicide and insecticide requirements, and management of cuttings post rooting.
Bio: John Davy is a Graduate of the University of West Florida and is Co-Owner of Panhandle Growers Inc. He started his business in 1987 with his partner Glen Strange, on 10 acres located in central Santa Rosa County. Over the last 34 years Panhandle Growers has expanded to over 350 acres of tree and large shrub production servicing the Gulf Coast primarily from New Orleans to Panama City, Florida. The farm consists of 30% large container production and 70% field production. Panhandle Growers plant material is available wholesale to the trade. Production consists of 80% native plant material, with most of the liner production done in-house. Panhandle Growers propagates crops from seed and rooted cuttings.
While not formally educated in Horticulture, it has been his passion for 60 years including breeding work with Camellias, and other woody ornamentals notably his line of Crepe myrtles licensed by the Southern Living Plant collection. John is married to his wife Sara, and has two children, Liz and Emmett. He is an active member in Olive Baptist Church and The Pensacola Camellia Society.
