PROGRAM DETAILS: Meadow Gardens, Grass Landscapes from Seed

Creating native meadow habitat gardens, made up of perennials - native grasses and wildflowers - has been a very effective approach for developing sustainable landscapes in city parks and public spaces. These gardens contain numerous species and have staggered bloom times through the growing season, supporting butterflies, bees, beetles and other specialized insects. The short statured grasses produce flowers, fruit and are most prominent in late summer and fall - they carry the winter landscape. The gardens discussed are models located across the region that were constructed using local ecotype seed. They demonstrate the beauty, ecological function and ease of care of this type of garden.
