BIO: Justin Scheiner is an Assistant Professor and Extension Viticulture Specialist with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. In his Extension role, he provides educational programming and technical support for grape growers in areas of Texas affected by Pierce’s Disease, and his research program focuses on best management practices for wine grapes in Texas. Dr. Scheiner also teaches undergraduate courses in the Department of Horticultural Sciences at Texas A&M, and serves as a member of the graduate faculty.

PROGRAM DETAILS: Earth-Kind Grapes: Low-Input Grapes for the Backyard

Earth-Kind Plant Trialing is a method used to identify low-input plants for the landscape and garden. This approach was applied to grapes in Texas as a means of highlighting disease resistant, aesthetic cultivars for back yard growers. Because most commercial grape cultivars are susceptible to numerous fungal and bacterial diseases, Earth-Kind Grapes provide better options for homeowners that don’t have the knowledge or interest in intensive management.
